Go-Live Isn’t the Finish Line: Why SAP EWM Sustainment Matters

Go-live is where the real work begins.

We recently spent time in Portland, Oregon, supporting a customer through their SAP EWM and PP go-live. It was a great experience, not only because of how smoothly the rollout went, but because we had the opportunity to see firsthand how much the business had grown throughout the transformation.

As the training and sustainment partner for the project, our role has been focused on preparing the business to successfully use SAP and building the knowledge and confidence needed to operate effectively after go-live.

One of the most rewarding parts of this experience has been watching that growth happen. Users who once needed significant guidance are becoming more confident in SAP, taking ownership of their processes, asking better questions, and stepping up when challenges arise. That kind of progress is one of the clearest signs of successful adoption.

Technology can be implemented. Processes can be documented. Training can be delivered. But true transformation happens when the people using the system become confident and capable enough to own it.

Go-Live Is Only the Beginning

The go-live itself went extremely well. There were a few issues along the way, but they were minimal and quickly resolved. More importantly, the business users demonstrated a strong level of ownership and engagement.

That early business buy-in made a difference.

During an implementation, there is usually no shortage of support. Consultants are engaged, training is taking place, super users are identified, processes are being documented, and the project team is closely involved with the business.

But eventually, the project team rolls off.

The warehouse doesn't.

The operation still has to perform. New employees will join the organization. Processes will change. Users will have questions. Knowledge will need to be reinforced. And the business will need to continue getting value from SAP.

This is where sustainment becomes critical.

What Happens After the Consultants Leave?

A successful go-live can create a false sense of completion. The system is live, the project is considered complete, and everyone moves on to the next priority.

But the months following go-live are often when some of the biggest adoption challenges begin to surface.

New employees may not receive the same level of training as the original project team. Experienced users may develop workarounds when they encounter challenges. Process changes may not be accompanied by updated training. Knowledge can become concentrated among a small group of super users.

Over time, these issues can affect productivity, consistency, and confidence across the operation.

That is why SAP EWM sustainment should not be viewed simply as ongoing technical support.

Sustainment is about sustaining the people, processes, and knowledge required to operate effectively.

The Measure of Success Is More Than Being Live

One of the biggest lessons we’ve taken from this project is that successful adoption is visible in the people.

You can see it when users become more confident navigating SAP. You can hear it in the questions they ask. You see it when they begin taking ownership rather than waiting for someone else to solve the problem.

That is the kind of growth we look for when supporting an organization through an SAP transformation.

The goal isn't simply to get a warehouse live on SAP EWM.

The goal is to help build a workforce that can confidently operate, adapt, and continue improving with the system.

That requires ongoing attention to training, user adoption, process knowledge, and operational performance.

The Question Every Business Should Be Asking

Instead of asking only:

“Are we live?”

Organizations should also be asking:

“Are our people equipped and confident enough to succeed six, twelve, or eighteen months from now?”

That question changes the conversation.

It moves the focus from completing an implementation to building long-term capability. It recognizes that technology is only one part of transformation and that the people using that technology ultimately determine whether the investment delivers lasting value.

Go-live is an important milestone, but it is not the destination.

It is the beginning of the next phase: sustaining the people, processes, and knowledge that make SAP work for the business.

That is where the real work begins.

Altech Consulting helps organizations strengthen SAP EWM adoption and sustainment by keeping their people prepared, confident, and capable long after go-live.
